The road just ended-no advance warning-just a large fence. The driveway beyond led to a ranch, and my short cut to Avila turned out to be a really long journey. As I began to turn the car around on the dusty road, a whinny and snort caught my attention. A striking painted horse looked indignantly at an intruder. He shook his head, swished his tail and snorted again. Of course, foolish lost humans don’t understand horse language, so this spunky free-spirit began to gallop across his field to make his point. His multi-colored mane whipped about in the wind like sparks from a fire, and I had to laugh as this beauty put on his show for me. After quite a commotion and much dust scattered into the air, Wildfire, as I so named him, turned with a final swish of his long tail, and haughtily sauntered away to gossip over the fence with a grey mare. No doubt, this rare intruder was the topic of discussion, as I could hear much neighing and snorting between them. With a smile on my lips and the sun in my eyes I left, much to the satisfaction of Wildfire.--- Susanne Renee Leasure
