Original Oil Painting
Archival Giclee Art Print
Recently, I traveled up the Big Sur coast to a beautiful waterfall about 15 minuets North of Ragged Point. Having visited there before, I was impressed with how beautiful it was. Although the massive waterfall was breathtaking as it cascaded over the rugged natural terrain, what was most memorable for me on this visit were the beautiful sections of bubbling pooled waters as they rolled and foamed over the rocks at the footsteps of the waterfall. The filtered sunlight pierced the water and illuminated the river bottom. There was a thickness to the water as it slickly bent over the rocks. It was like some kind of crystal in motion. As little sections of water would begin to foam from small turbulences, they added variety to the smoothly flowing textures. The trees cast shadows that wrapped around some of the boulders. I loved that I could discern the shadows from the branches in the canopy above as they weaved their way across the moss-laden rocks carpeting the riverbed. Contrasting the shadows were the patches of illumination. The river bottom just glowed! It excited me to watch a river bass swim as it emerged from shadow into a glowing patch of sunlit river bottom and back into shadow. As scales shimmered across its variegated body, the subtle glints added to the placid splendor of the scene. The sound of the river and the clarity of the water made me thirsty. Inspiration compelled me to begin the series I call Cascading Waters.
